WIGGINTON Tennis Club's Denise Crane and Sue Espiner successfully defended their Beryl Bean Over-55s Ladies' Doubles tournament crown on home turf.

The event, now in its 13th year, involved 10 couples from nine different clubs, split into two groups playing in a round-robin format.

Poppleton’s Sheena Jackson and Hillary Brown just missed out on qualifying from the group stages, as did Bishopthorpe pair Andrene Watson and Georgina MacKenzie.

The semi-finals saw Crane and Espiner comfortably overcome New Earswick’s Maz Broadbent and Amy Walker, while Fulford couple Jill McCreedy and Anna Baker edged past Dunnington duo Joyce Rhodes and Sue Sumner.

The final was contested over one set.

All four players were involved in some excellent cross court rallies.

Baker and McCreedy eased into a 4-2 lead but Crane and Espiner were not about to relinquish their crown and, after some inspiring play, came back to win 6-4.

Presenting the trophy, Beryl Bean thanked all the players for taking part and Wigginton for hosting the competition. Proceeds from the raffle on the day raised £100 for St Leonard's Hospice.
