SHERIFF Hutton Bridge product Matthew Fisher intends to keep contributing with both bat and ball after helping Yorkshire take a major step towards avoiding relegation.

The White Rose outfit’s Specsavers County Championship status looked perilous when an overnight second-innings total of 56-3 quickly became 96-7 with 79 runs still needed to secure victory over Warwickshire at Headingley.

But a heroic eight-wicket partnership between Fisher (15) and Steve Patterson (44 not out) saw Yorkshire home, meaning just seven points from next week’s final fixture at Essex will now see their team beat the drop.

Fisher also took five wickets and hit 37 in the first innings of an impressive first Championship outing during 2017.

Expressing his delight at his and the team’s performance, Fisher said: “With it being my first game of the season, it was great to get off to a good start with the five wickets. Then, I really enjoyed the batting in both innings.

“It’s important for everyone down the order to contribute and, fingers crossed, I can continue to do that because it can take pressure off your bowling. It was really tough trying to get the 79 runs to win with Steve Patterson because Jeetan Patel’s a proper bowler.

“But I loved every minute of it, and I’m over the moon that we won.”
