YORK pair Richie Corner and Chris Quantock claimed two big scalps on their way to qualifying for next month’s HappyBet International Darts Open in Germany.

Corner knocked out former Premier League star Wes Newton 6-3 on his way to making the field for the Riesa-based PDC event, which takes place from September 22 to 24.

Ex-BDO World Championship semi-finalist Robbie Green, meanwhile, was seen off 6-4 by Quantock at the Barnsley heat.

Corner had earlier defeated Jonny Clayton 6-4, with Quantock overcoming Harry Robinson 6-3.

Both players missed out on a place at the HappyBet German Darts Grand Prix, though, after Quantock lose 6-3 to Andrew Gilding, having earlier progressed past Steve West 6-4 and Corner was whitewashed by Ricky Evans.

In the latest rounds of the Players Championship, Quantock also enjoyed a run to the last 16 in Barnsley.

He emerged victorious against Nathan Aspinall (6-2), Rob Cross (6-2) and Adam Hunt (6-5) before going down 6-3 to William O’Connor.,

Corner lost 6-2 to world number 14 Ian White in that competition, having defeated 2007 World Championship quarter-finalist Alan Tabern 6-2.

In the other Players Championship tournament, Quantock defeated former UK Open and World Grand Prix champion Robert Thornton 6-3 and Brian Woods 6-2, before succumbing to ex-world number one Mervyn King 6-1 in the last 32.

Corner fell at the first hurdle 6-1 to John Henderson.
