WIGGINTON Grasshoppers lifted the Bryan Shearer Trophy following a 4-2 victory over the York Minster Engineering League representative team.

Goals from Mat Tiplady (2), Jordan Holt and Eddie Clapham saw last term’s league champions prevail at York RI’s New Lane ground, with Daniel Pedros replying twice for the reps, who also had a Copmanthorpe's Jake Moyes sent off on the half-hour mark.

Tiplady, who worked tirelessly up front for Grasshoppers, was named man of the match with Matty Pallister starring for the reps following another outstanding display at the back.

The reps, meanwhile, were also left reeling at the end of the game when manager Andy Barkway resigned from the role.

On that shock announcement, a league management committee spokesman said: “Andy and his assistant Gary Kitson had done a remarkable job under difficult circumstances in running the squad, but we have been informed he is unable to continue due to a holiday commitment at the time of the next FA Inter-League Cup game.

“Andy and Gary Kitson, who is currently out of action due to a recent operation, have also been disappointed by the commitment of some clubs towards the reps’ squad, which is a view shared by some committee members. Discussions are still ongoing and, hopefully, a solution can be found that will keep Andy involved.

“Meanwhile, the committee have approached another (YMEL) premier league manager to be in place for the game against the West Riding League in October.”
