PETER Handscomb has made such a big impression on our dressing room at Yorkshire during the last four months.

He’s certainly one of the best people and players I’ve ever met, and we will all be rooting for him to do well in this winter’s Ashes series.

Mind you, we still want the Aussies to lose!

The way he carries himself is exceptional, and he’s been brilliant with every single one of the lads.

Even with things like 12th man duties, he’s the first to say ‘thank you and well done’ at the end of the game and makes you feel like you’ve been part of the game.

I would have absolutely no hesitation in re-signing him as our overseas player for next season if at all possible with the schedules.

I’m sure Andrew Gale and Martyn Moxon would snap their hands off to get him back next season, and hopefully we can.

On Sunday, against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, we were beaten by one of the best knocks I’ve ever seen live from Alex Hales, who scored a 45-ball century to help them chase down a target of 224.

We said in the dressing room that we were on the end of a proper knock.

Even before the game, watching Alex hit them in the nets, you could tell he was a class above. He showed why he’s one of the best one-day batsmen in the world at the minute.

He enjoyed his day, and there was no real concern from the lads or coaching staff about our prospects moving forwards in this competition.

But we still have to look at what improvements we can make going forwards.

What came out of our chat in the dressing room was that we were a bit predictable with the ball.

We didn’t really go to bouncers even though it was a short boundary. We said we’d have rather got hit for a six off a bouncer than not bowl one at all.

We kind of feel that bouncers make your worst balls better because the batsman is sat back a little bit and has it in his mind that the bowler has one up his sleeve.

Learning from that Notts game, we could have gone to the bouncer earlier. But it’s so hard in the heat of the moment.

As I’ve said, there was no real concern about the result.

We batted so well once again to post 223-5, a total that will win you more games than you lose. Scoring over 200 consistently – we’ve done it three times this season – is very pleasing for us all.

Less than 180 on a good pitch doesn’t look like it’s going to happen with our line-up.

I would say the way the batsmen are scoring and the areas they’re hitting is pretty much perfect at the minute, and we’re all confident that 240 is just around the corner.

We’re at home to Derbyshire tomorrow, and we’ve done really well at Headingley over the last couple of seasons. We have won our last eight T20 games there.

I believe we have a run of games coming up where we can really target some wins having got the best two teams (Notts and Birmingham) in the group out of the way over the weekend just gone.

I don’t have any complaints about my lack of T20 games at the minute.

I played that one game against Durham at Headingley last Wednesday, but when someone like Liam Plunkett is coming back in and taking your place, you can accept it a lot more because he’s one of the best bowlers in the world with the white ball.

When he gets back fit, you have to play him.

I’ll continue to work hard in the nets and in the second team, and I’ll be ready to go again when given an opportunity.
