FOR the second successive weekend, the weather hampered matches in the Fulford Ladies' Invitation League.

In the games that did take place, Sue Midsely and Ali Ward were unbeaten for Boston Spa as they maintained their 100 per cent record in division four, with the 64-44 victory at Tollerton leaving them odds-on to claim the title.

Julia Sykes and Georgina Mackenzie were in form for Bishopthorpe in their victory over Heworth, leaving them in second place and leading the chasing pack.

Appleton’s defeat of New Earswick gives them an outside chance of being involved in the promotion places.

Dunnington had mixed fortunes in division one, losing their first match of the campaign to Castlegarth before trouncing a depleted Poppleton, for whom captain Hilary Spencer and Rosie Cantrell continue to battle.

Castlegarth climbed to third after their annihilation of Pocklington, Angela Wood and Charlotte Todd netting 35 games.

York-1 look favourites to retain the top crown after battering Fulford 83-25.

At the foot of the table, two out of Poppleton, Fulford and Bishopthorpe will lose their premier status.

David Lloyd confirmed their division two promotion at the first attempt after beating struggling Dunnington, Sarah Smelik and Sharon Davidson bagging 25 games in the 68-40 victory.

Denise Crane and Eleanor Bradshaw teamed up for Wigginton, only dropping one game as they hammered Starbeck 82-26, leaving Wig poised for promotion.

Fiona Lambert and Josephine Nuttman starred for Pocklington in their 59-49 win against David Lloyd, leaving Pock almost certain division three champions and Lloyd still in the mix for the second promotion slot.

Copmanthorpe and Poppleton will both be promoted from division six, though it remains to be seen who will be champions.

Jo Allerton and Wendy Battle’s 27-game haul led Popp to victory over Sheriff, but they then went down heavily to new leaders Copmanthorpe, whose couples won every rubber in their 78-30 win.

Knaresborough secured third place after defeating Bubwith 57-51.

Rufforth signed off their season by defeating division seven champions-elect York-3, Wendy Farnell and Denise Reilly netting 24 games in the 64-44 victory to confirm their team’s promotion.

* The IT Sports and IT Too Tournaments will take place over the weekend of September 9-10 at Fulford Tennis Club.
