SHIPTON will take on Dringhouses 'A' for the Maddison Cup and Dunnington 'A' will meet Haxby Road in the Coronation Cup showdown after they all won their respective semi-finals at Rowntree Bowls Club.

The finals of the York Veterans competitions will now take place at West Park, Holgate on July 27.

The Dringhouses rink of George Tuxford, Phil Turnbull, Geoff Symons and Mal Thompson took an early lead against Holgate WMC and, with the help of a four, led 11-6 after 10 ends.

Opponents Brian Horner, Peter Waring, Norman Ellis and Gerry Mackie levelled the scores at 11-11 after 12 of the 18 ends, but the Dringy team were stirred back into action and they picked up three twos and a three in the last six to win

20-13.

The second Maddison semi was much tighter.

Rowntree 'A's Brian Hardcastle, Ron Fisher, Frank Williams and Bernard Drury led Shipton 6-3 after six ends but S Andrew, Maurice Peacock, Bob Elliot and Brian Gray replied with a four and a two to go 9-6 up.

Shipton stayed ahead and were 15-10 up with three ends to play, at which point Rowntrees picked up a single and a three to go into the last end only one down.

They laid two for victory but Shipton picked up the jack for two to win 17-14.

In the Coronation Cup, the Dunnington 'A' rink of Graham Instone, Jim Robinson, Dave Kermode and Dick Osguthorpe stormed 8-0 up after six ends against Poppleton 'B'.

Colin Robinson, Alan Taylor, David Rickatson and Julian Crabb picked up a two and a three to get back in the game but lost the next seven ends to go 21-5 down after 14, Dunnington eventually winning 21-8.

In the closest encounter of the day, the Haxby Road team of John Butler, Tommy Halden, Brian Brigham and Alan Clapham pipped Barbican's Keith Ryder, Colin Haigh, Brian Ball and Gordon Walker after an extra end.

Haxby Road led 4-0 but Barbican won the next five ends and, with the help of a four at the seventh, took an 8-4 lead.

Haxby Road struck back with with a six at the ninth to go 10-8 up and they later led 14-10 with three to play.

Barbican scored a three and a two to go into the last one up but Haxby Road levelled the scores with a single and bagged another single in the deciding extra end for a 16-15 success.
