SUMMER signing Louis Almond opened his account for York City and returning striker Michael Rankine was also on target during a 2-2 pre-season home draw with Scunthorpe.

The Minstermen were more than good vale for a share of the spoils with the Lincolnshire visitors, who will ply their trade three tiers higher next season, only coming back from 2-0 down after Gary Mills' team played out the last quarter of the game with half a team of trialists and youth-team scholars.

Almond was one of three summer signings to start the match, alongside fellow home debutants Jon Worsnop and Josh Law and City were quickly into their stride against a Scunthorpe side that included all their senior professionals over the course of the game.

It took Mills’ men just six minutes to open the scoring when Dan Parslow picked out Amari Morgan-Smith at the far post with a well-delivered, right-wing cross.

The former Cheltenham striker then headed back across the face of goal and Almond pounced from a matter of yards to find the net.

At the other end, Paddy Madden found himself in the clear, but Worsnop smothered the Iron striker’s shot and was also equal to Jonny Margetts’ near-post drive moments later.

For City, a terrific Sean Newton cross from the left just eluded Jon Parkin at the far post, before a weak Madden edge-of-the-box attempt drifted wide.

After Adriano Moke drilled over from 20 yards, last season’s League One play-off semi-finalists continued to be wasteful in front of goal.

Margetts missed a gaping goal from six yards on 35 minutes after Worsnop could not get enough purchase on his punch.

Following a diagonal drive by Josh Morris that was safely gathered by Worsnop, Madden went on to head over following Sam Mantom’s right-wing centre and, after breaking through the right channel, tried a poorly-executed lob that was never going to have the required height to beat the home keeper.

With the last action of the first period, Parkin then curled over a 30-yard free kick.

Half-time substitute Theo Wharton went close after the restart with a dead-ball opportunity from a similar distance before the Minstermen doubled their advantage on 49 minutes from a familiar source.

Sam Muggleton's long throw from the right landed straight on to Rankine's head and he directed the ball into Matt Gilks' bottom-left corner.

A short back pass by trialist Jassem Sukar then saw Worsnop rush out of his goal and clear against away forward Kyle Wootton with the ball ricocheting wide.

Rankine, meanwhile, tried his luck with a firmly-struck free kick that deflected wide off the Scunthorpe wall.

But former City midfielder Neal Bishop reduced the deficit on 75 minutes, taking advantage of a much-changed home back line to stab past second-half sub Luke Simpson from eight yards and, within seconds, Hakeeb Adelakun earned Scunthorpe a draw after raiding down the right and beating the transfer-listed net-minder.
