LEADERS Holgate WMC suffered their first defeat of the York Amateur Bowling Association league division one season as Dunnington provided a shock in their rearranged fixture.

Dunnington won 6-2 as wins for Andy Mooring and Ralf Tiplady were good enough to take the aggregate points, despite Dick Osguthorpe losing out to Pete Jackson and John Taylor falling to Gary Lewington.

In Monday's other rearranged game, RI Corinthians edged a 6-2 victory at Dringhouses' racecourse ground - the visitors coming out on top by just one shot in the aggregate score, 78-77.

Last Wednesday's round of league fixtures was wiped out by inclement weather.

There was a shock in the Williamson Cup, as division two side Hull Road Park handsomely beat division one outfit Bootham 94-51.

In the Freedom & Fellowship Cup, Retreat overcame Harrogate 69-48.25 and Minster beat Clifton to progress to the last eight.

The remaining ties - Dringhouses v Scarcroft, RI Amateurs v RI Corinthians, and Poppleton Road WMC v Haxby Road - will be completed on Monday, starting at 7pm.

The quarter-finals of both competitions will played next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the YABA Triples competition got underway with Mal Bulmer's RI Corinthians trio coming out on top against RI Amateurs' Ron Keeler following a deciding extra end of a fine clash.

Bulmer had needed four shots on the 18th end to force a draw and they bagged them when Mick O’Donnell failed to remove the shots.

Bulmer was then able to hold on to the two shots held on the extra end to win the game 20-18.

In the one other first round fixture, Graham Bell received a walkover from David Hall.

In the York C&IU Evening League, Holgate now have a clear three-point lead at the summit after taking maximum points from their match against Poppleton Road.

Clarence leapfrogged Railway Institute into second place after beating them 6-2.

Meanwhile, in a rematch of last year's Evening League Knock-out Cup final, Railway Institute turned the tables as they beat the holders Clarence by 18 shots.

RI now meet Tramways in the final, the latter having booked their place with a win against Acomb. The match will be played at the Railway Institute green, Ashton Lane, on Tuesday, July 11, at 7pm.

All fixtures in the Afternoon League were rained off.
