RYEDALE teenager Nathan Smith bagged a wonderful first place in the ITU Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon event held in Leeds.

Smith performed superbly to win the Youth and Junior Super Sprint race by 19 seconds from Sam Hart, of Berkshire.

Martha Calton-Seal, of Ryedale School, also had a blistering race in the girls' Tristar 3 event, coming away with a silver medal.

Ryedale's Yorkshire & Humberside Triathlon Academy stars Tyler Hutchinson, Maurice Calton-Seal, Emma Clapton, Abi Smith and Finnian Hutchinson all turned in top-20 performances in their respective races to cap a fabulous day at Roundhay Park.

Leeds legends Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, meanwhile, took the top two spots in the elite men’s race.

The Leeds Triathlon is part of the national Superseries, which the Ryedale athletes qualified for during an assessment day at Loughborough University. The races bring together the best young triathletes from across the UK.

Both Nathan Smith, an England youth international, and Clapton, who attend Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering, were awarded the Brownlee Foundation prize by the Yorkshire & Humberside Academy last year for their standout performances over the season.
