UP-AND-COMING Malton & Norton Golf Club star David Hague ended just one shot short of a championship record as he stormed to the Lagonda Trophy title at Gog Magog GC.

The amateur ace did set a new course record, though, as he finished the four rounds 12 shots clear at the top of the leaderboard to continue his eye-catching form this year.

The victory took Hague to fifth in the 2017 English Order of Merit, reduced his handicap to minus-4, and cemented his reputation as one of the country's brightest amateur prospects.

In a solid first day at the Cambridgeshire course, Hague had rounds of 71 and 72 to sit four strokes behind joint-leaders Connor Worsdall, of The Essex GC, and Joshua Read, of Three Rivers GC.

However, the Yorkshireman then enjoyed a stunning second day with a third-round score of 62 - a Lagonda record for a single round - to propel his way to the summit.

And by the 14th hole of the fourth round, Hague was at nine under, with an outside chance of beating the championship record of 267, set by Miles Mackman in 2007.

It would have taken an unbelievable effort in the pouring rain at Gog Magog, needing another round of 62 just to equal Mackman, but he was only just unable to match it, after an amazing fourth round of 63.

The two-round total of 125 on the second day was still some achievement.

Hague said: “I’m really, really pleased. I couldn’t have played a shot better that afternoon.

“To get my first win in an England event was fantastic. I’ve had a few top-five finishes this year.

“My long game was good all day. I kept it in play in the morning, hit all the fairways and only missed one green.

“It was similar in the afternoon. I just played a steady game of golf.

“It’s the first time I’ve been under par in a 72-hole event. Fifteen under in a day is pretty impressive so I’ve kind of broken all my records as well.”
