VADAINE Oliver insists that he could yet stay with York City in National League North.

The former Lincoln City striker was an FA Trophy final hero for the Minstermen on Sunday - bagging the second goal in a 3-2 victory over Macclesfield Town at Wembley.

Manager Gary Mills believes Oliver will now leave the club to play higher up the league but the striker told the Press that his options are still open.

"It's a long summer yet, and I still have another year here, so we will see. I am not opposed to anything right now," he said. "I have had chats with the gaffer. He does want me to stay. We have got to see what happens."

Oliver, who joined the Minstermen from Crewe Alexandra two years ago, spent five months on loan at Notts County this season after falling out of favour with former manager Jackie McNamara.

However, he had been struggling to come to the terms with the death of his grandmother and started only two league games for the League Two side before returning to Bootham Crescent in January.

Under Mills, he has finished the season with eight goals in 15 games, including his strike at Wembley, and repaired his relationship with the club's supporters.

"Obviously, I had a fall-out with the previous gaffer," he reflected. "So to get the fans back on side now is brilliant. I want to thank them because they have been brilliant with me since I came back.

"Working with Gary Mills and (assistant-manager) Darren Caskey has also been brilliant. They have given me a 'licence' and a 'freedom' and I have thrived under it."

Oliver, 25, rates his Wembley goal as one of the highlights of his career and dedicated the moment to his late grandmother.

"It was my first time at Wembley and to come away with a win and get a goal was an unbelievable feeling," he said. "It was a big achievement for me and I am really thankful.

"I want to dedicate that goal to my Nan who passed away. It's been a hard year losing such a vital person in my family and it's been hard to cope with.

"But right now, my focus is on enjoying this victory and then enjoying time off," he said. "I am going to spend time now with my son, my girlfriend, my Mum and all the family. We will tackle things after that and see where we go."

Despite suffering the agony of relegation on the final day of the season, Oliver has absolute confidence that Mills will lead York back to the National League in 12 months' time.

"The last day of the season was horrible. To be safe at 90 minutes and then have it taken away from you was horrible," he said, in reference to the stoppage time goal by rivals Guiseley that condemned City to the drop.

"But things have turned around, the new gaffer has been brilliant, and he is the one who will sort it all out.

"Since I came back in January from my loan, I have got nothing but praise for him. He has been unbelievable and has definitely got what it takes to get the boys promoted again next season. They will be straight back up again, 100 per cent. I don't think it will be a case of being in that league a very long time, trying to come back up.

"Getting that win at Wembley is something to build on, especially for the boys who will be here and going into next season," he added. "It is a great start. If he gets everyone to stay it will be brilliant and the club will bounce back up again.

"It's a really promising time at York now and I think the fans have got a lot to look forward to," Oliver stressed. "I am just really happy that they had the win at Wembley to appreciate and I hope they all enjoy it."
