FORMER York City inside-forward Tommy Ross has died at the age of 71.

Ross scored 23 goals in 67 appearances for the Minstermen between 1967 and 1969 and, in his first season at the club, finished second-top goalscorer on 14 behind Ted MacDougall.

He was also the best man at future first division top scorer and Scotland international MacDougall’s wedding, while the pair played together at Bootham Crescent.

Prior to joining City, Tain-born Ross established himself as a prolific Highland League marksman, scoring 44 goals in one season at the age of 18.

During that period, he also set a Guinness world record by hitting a 90-second hat-trick against Nairn County in 1964.

His goal prowess earned him a move to Peterborough United, prior to his Minstermen switch.

In his second season under Joe Shaw and, then, Tom Johnston, he managed a hat-trick during a 6-0 FA Cup first-round thrashing of South Shields, before asking for a transfer in the summer.

Ross went on to play for Wigan, Rossendale United and Brora Rangers, before later managing St Duthus in his home town.
