TEENAGE rower Lucy Edmunds has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Rowing Junior Championships in Germany this weekend.

Edmunds, 17, who rows for York City Rowing Club, will compete in a double scull at the championships, which are being held in Krefeld near Düsseldorf.

It is the third time she has been called-up by the national junior team in the last 12 months.

Edmunds, who is studying 'A' levels in the sixth form at Huntington School, is one of only three female GB scullers selected to compete at the championships.

It follows on from her selection to represent GB at the International Junior Regatta in Munich two weeks ago where she finished fourth in a women's quadruple scull, narrowly missing out on bronze to the team from the Czech Republic.

She also competed in a double scull, with her partner Holly Dunford from Molesey Boat Club in London, and won the 'B' final in a time which would have seen them finish fifth in the 'A' final.

Her success at being selected for the GB Junior Rowing Team follows hot on the heels of her being named 'Young Sportswoman of the Year' at the annual Active York Sports Awards in March.

This is also her third time representing her country in the national junior team.

Last summer she won a silver medal with the GB Junior Rowing Team girls' quadruple scull at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Poznan, Poland.

Edmunds has been training in York with her doubles partner, Beth Willford-Dutton from Northwich Rowing Club, as they prepare for the European Championships.

"In Munich, as a quad, we were bitterly disappointed to have just missed out on winning a medal," she said.

"It was a really close and hard-fought race. I was pleased we won the 'B' final in the double but it would have been great to have made the 'A' final.

"It's a huge honour to represent the country and it is a great experience racing internationally.

"York City Rowing Club have been so supportive, especially my coach Phil Jones, and it is nice to be able to put York on the national stage."
