TOMYRIS staked a claim for the Group One Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot with a smooth victory in the Longines Irish Champions Weekend Fillies' Stakes at York.

The lightly-raced daughter of Invincible Spirit would be taking a big leap in class but showed she was going the right way when making it two wins from three starts in this Listed heat over a mile.

Leading a furlong out under Andrea Atzeni, the Roger Varian-trained three-year-old held the late challenge of On Her Toes by three-quarters of a length, with long-time leader Sibilance third.

"I liked her at Newmarket when she won but I wasn't sure how she'd handle the ground today," said Varian of his 5-1 winner.

"Andrea said she didn't love it and she'd be better on a bit of good ground. Andrea also said he thought he hit the front too soon but because of the ground, once he had her momentum up he didn't want to disappoint her.

"What he felt was pleasing was that when the second came at her she picked up again, so she was probably idling.

"She's in the Coronation Stakes and we'll have a chat but I'd have thought it would be jolly tempting. She's an exciting filly for the rest of the year."

Tomyris was given a quote of 16-1 for the Coronation Stakes with Betfair.

Main Desire (4-1) is also set for the Royal meeting after following up her debut success in the Langleys Solicitors British EBF Marygate Fillies' Stakes.

After breaking the course record at Nottingham, she encountered much slower conditions this time but handled the ground well enough to retain her unbeaten record by beating Neola by half a length.

Trainer Michael Bell said: "I've not had a filly like her since Margot Did, she'd be the closest. From the very first day, she's looked exciting.

"We won't duck away from soft ground in future but she's definitely better on faster ground.

"That's the first time she's been off the bridle in her life as she's done everything so easy up to now.

"We'll fancy our chances (at Royal Ascot) unless Wesley Ward brings another monster over. It will either be the Queen Mary or the Albany. My gut feeling is the Queen Mary."

Paul Mulrennan dictated affairs from the start on Lord Yeats (12-1), with Jedd O'Keeffe's four-year-old trotting up by six lengths from Burguillos in the Betway Jorvik Handicap on his first start for 224 days.

Another all-the-way winner was Hells Babe (4-1 favourite). She took the Irish EBF Frank Whittle Partnership Fillies' Handicap by two lengths from Florenza, whom she had beaten at Doncaster three weeks ago, for trainer Mick Appleby and 3lb claimer Alistair Rawlinson.

Coolfitch (16-1) gave trainer David O'Meara his third winner of the three-day meeting when taking the Yorkshire Equine Practice Handicap under 3lb claimer Josh Doyle.

Charlie Appleby's Alqamar (14-5 favourite) took the step up to a mile and a half in his stride as he opened his account in some style by five lengths in the 7IM Supports Cystic Fibrosis Care Handicap.
