YORK's Liam Brough is heading to Australia for his next fight after winning the International Combat Organisation 63.5kg world title.

Brough, who fights out of Legions Gym at Clifton Moor, beat Germany's Pavel Magureanu under full Muay Thai rules during the 'Mayhem Show' promoted by Andrew Hennessey in Birmingham.

According to head coach Dave Phillips, Brough had controlled the fight from the first round - and eventually cut his opponent with elbows in the fourth.

Magureanu, however, refused to buckle and the fight was ultimately decided on points.

Brough already held the ICO's English, British and European titles while Magureanu was the German champion with 46 fights under his belt.

Phillips said: "We knew he was a strong opponent and he showed how tough he was. Liam is currently the only Muay Thai world champion to come from York so he is setting the standard. But I am sure there will be another out of the Legions Gym very soon."

Brough's next fight is against Jesse James March in Australia on August 4 under CMT rules (caged Muay Thai in 4oz mma gloves) in a show promoted by John Wayne Parr - an Aussie kickboxing legend nicknamed "The Gunslinger"

Meanwhile, both Jeff Bartlett and Joseph Grennan, from Legions Gym, emerged victorious from an event in Haxby last weekend.
