YORK CITY pulled the plug on plans to stage an FA Trophy press conference at Bootham Crescent just two days before the final league game of the season.

The Football Association had wanted to hold a press conference this lunchtime featuring managers and players from all four clubs involved in next month's 'Non-League Finals Day'.

However, with York still locked in a desperate battle for National League survival, that plan has been scrapped after the club made representations to the FA.

York manager Gary Mills and Macclesfield's John Askey were lined-up to field questions about the FA Trophy final with Cleethorpes Town manager Marcus Newell and South Shields' joint-managers Graham Fenton and Lee Picton set to wave the flag for the FA Vase show-piece.

Both finals are due to take place at Wembley on Sunday, May 21 – which is still over three weeks away.

The press conference was to be held at Bootham Crescent rather than Wembley because all four clubs involved are based in the north of England.

It had been arranged this week as clubs often take short holidays after final league games.

However, the prospect of talking about Wembley NOW had become an unwanted distraction for York ahead of such a vital game for their future.

The Minstermen, who slipped back into the drop zone last weekend, will be relegated to National League North if they lose on Saturday.

Last night, York manager Mills said: "It was a club decision and, regardless of what happens on Saturday, we are going to Wembley on May 21.

"We can concentrate on the FA Trophy final after this weekend. All our concentration for now has to be on trying to win one of the biggest games in the club's history.

"Once that is out of the way, we can start concentrating on the FA Trophy final," he added.

BT Sport, meanwhile, have announced that they will be screening this weekend's clash live.

The game kicks-off at 12.15pm and tickets are available at the club ticket office. The match is NOT all-ticket, but advance sales have topped 1,000 in addition to 1,250 season tickets.
