LEADERS Heworth ARLC maintained their 100 per cent start to the season in the Yorkshire Men’s League division one with a 38-28 home victory over cross city rivals York Acorn ‘A’

In a tough, uncompromising, derby the Villagers led 14-10 at the interval. The lead changed hands several time before Heworth posted three tries in the final 15 minutes to secure a third consecutive victory.

Heworth took the lead when player-coach George Elliott went over for an unconverted try. Acorn levelled through centre Mark Sanderson.

The home side restored their advantage when a pass from Lewis Brown allowed Lewis Worthington to touch down out wide. The visitors responded and Jake Calam ‘s try was converted by scrum half Tom Mackley.

Four minutes from the interval, Brown crossed near the posts and Joe Deighton added the extras. Heworth increased their lead when Deighton bludgeoned his way over before tagging on the goal.

Acorn regained the lead with tries from Luke Swales and Chris Rushworth - both of which were improved by Mackley. On 64 minutes, following an altercation, Swales was sin-binned and the Villagers took advantage - Liam Jackson tore a hole in Acorn’s defensive line and raced away from 45 metres to score under the posts.

Heworth were now in the ascendancy and Dave Hayes put Deighton over for his second try. Elliott registered a brace and Deighton slotted all three conversions. There was still time for Swales to return to the fray for a try in the final minute which Mackley goaled.
