YORK City’s National League survival is hanging in the balance following a 1-1 draw at Woking.

A second-half penalty, conceded by Sean Newton and converted by Gozie Ugwu, saw City trail at the Kingfield Stadium.

Jon Parkin levelled the scores with a 75th-minute equaliser following a long throw by Sam Muggleton, but the Minstermen now go into next weekend’s final-day home match with Forest Green in the relegation zone - one point from safety and reliant on other teams to slip up.

After Asa Hall’s early 20-yard effort bobbled well wide, the Minstermen survived a second-minute scare when Ugwu broke the visitors’ offside trap and Scott Loach raced out to smother the 20-goal striker’s first shot before a covering Hamza Bencherif cleared his second attempt off the line.

Delano Sam-Yorke went on to miss the target by some distance with a 25-yard volley and Simon Heslop was equally wayward from a similar range.

On 19 minutes, Parkin flashed a shot across the face of goal from an acute angle and uprooted the corner flag, before then teeing up Bencherif for an excellent ten-yard opportunity that he scooped over the bar.

At the other end, meanwhile, Dan Parslow survived strong penalty appeals after he appeared to mistime a swipe at Nathan Ralph who, moments later, sent in a left-wing cross that Kane Ferdinand glanced just wide with his head.

For City, Amari Morgan-Smith curled wide from the edge of the box and then charged down the flank to send Vadaine Oliver through the right channel only for home keeper Michael Poke to rush out and block his shot.

Following the break, a thumping 35-yard free kick by Parkin was pushed over his bar by Poke and Morgan-Smith headed wide from six yards after Parslow had helped on Newton’s right-wing corner to the near post But, at the other end, Alex Whittle was fortunate not to concede a spot kick after sliding into Ferdinand, before Ugwu scuffed an edge-of-the-box effort straight at Loach.

City fell behind, though, on 66 minutes after Newton tugged Sam-Yorke’s shirt as he burst through the right channel.

Ugwu went on to keep his composure, converting a third penalty in as many games by sidefooting down the middle as Loach dived to his left.

Another charge from the right saw Sam-Yorke’s rising shot then pushed over his bar by Loach, who gathered Joey Jones’ header from the subsequent corner.

City chief Gary Mills responded by sending Muggleton on and, after Parkin’s 20-yard free kick was deflected wide, the visitors won a throw close to the half-way line on the left flank.

Former Eastleigh full-back Muggleton launched the ball into the box and, after competing in the air, Parkin made no mistake when the ball fell to his feet ten yards from goal, drilling low into Poke’s right corner.

Late on, Heslop’s deflected 20-yard volley dipped just over and, on 89 minutes, a firm Oliver drive was kept out at the near post by Poke as City ended the afternoon with just a share of the spoils.
