A FOUR-WAY fight for the York Conservative Clubs UK Snooker League title will be taken right to the wire.

In the most exciting climax ever to a season, just one point separates Fulford A and Bootham A (both on 56) and Acomb A and Fulford B (both on 55) with one game each left to play.

Fulford A maintained their challenge with a 5-2 win over Bootham B, taking the first five frames as Tom Wilson set the ball rolling by beating Matt Smith.

That was followed by victories for Wayne Puleston, Glen Mountain, Sam Parkinson and Sam England over Chris Thompson, Ian Robinson, Lionel Barnes and Paul Powell respectively.

Bootham hit back by winning the last two, as Andy Proud beat Jamie Husband and Paul Mahoney overcame Tom Lewis.

Mahoney’s triumph ensured he clinched the Molson Coors Worthington Player of the Year award with 13 wins.

Acomb A stumbled in their championship challenge, as they lost 5-2 at home to Malton.

The visitors won the first four frames thanks to Steve Pawson, Alan Sherry (31 break), Dan Pawson and Steve Beal with Dan Potter, Richard Lillie, Jon Milner and Keith Thornhill respectively on the receiving end.

Mick Borg (43 break) managed to respond for Acomb by beating Phil Hart, but Chris Atkinson overcame Paul Holmes to put Malton 5-1 in front, before a walkover reduced the deficit.

Bootham A edged out Acomb B 4-3.

Rob Barron beat Chris Nicholson and Tim Fillingham overcame Andy Morgan to give Bootham a good start.

But wins for John Ashwell and Kevin Ventress over Andy Wynn and Colin Robinson respectively levelled the match.

Brian Henry then beat Barry Rankin to put Acomb one up, but Bootham won the final two frames to take the spoils with Jeff Brown and Stuart Martel prevailing over Andy Stone and Steve Rodgers respectively.

The clash between the two Heworth sides saw the B team emerge 4-3 winners.

Ian Strickland and Peter Revis (25 and 22 breaks) gave the B team a 2-0 lead.

But the A team turned the tables after Gary Douglas, Neal Wood and Richard Burdett respectively defeated Andy Hurley, Andi Ireland and Andy Ogley.

The match was decided, though, when B team duo John Sherlock and Simon Whiteley saw off the respective challenges of Steve Burdett and Clive Whtye.
