YORK City’s new goalkeeper Scott Loach has admitted he is shocked ex-Notts County team-mate Vadaine Oliver is plying his trade at National League level.

Oliver has netted five times and provided four goal assists in 14 outings since returning to the Minstermen from a half-season loan spell at Meadow Lane.

Former England under-21 international Loach has now been reunited with Oliver following his loan switch and he confessed: “I can’t believe Vadaine didn’t stay at Notts County or isn’t playing at another League club, but there are some good players at this level when you look at the likes of Newts (Sean Newton) as well.

“Dagenham also had some decent lads on Saturday, as do clubs like Lincoln and Forest Green. But that’s football - where you play can sometimes come down to other circumstances.

“Not only is Vadaine a good target man, but he also works hard and keeps going. If he doesn’t win the first header, he goes for the next one and I think it will be good for him learning off Jon Parkin, who’s a similar player, but has been there and done it.”

Ex-Championship campaigner Loach, meanwhile, has dropped another level himself, having lost his Magpies place over the summer to former Rotherham team-mate Adam Collin, with a rule amendment meaning loan moves between Football League clubs cannot take place outside of the transfer windows anymore.

Loach is now relishing the chance to impress at Bootham Crescent, though, with his current playing contract expiring in the summer.

“I finished last season strongly at Notts County, but the manager changed and John Sheridan had his own opinions which you have to accept,” he explained. “Adam has done really well and it’s hard to complain when that happens.

“It’s also a struggle to get out with the new loan rules. York showed an interest in getting me on loan at the start of the season, but I wanted to stay in the League and there looked like being opportunities to do that.

“When that fell through, Kyle (Letheren) had been brought in, but I’m here now and, despite league positions, York City are one of the top-three clubs in this division.

“I don’t want to be sat on a bench doing nothing. I’ve played close to 300 games and have always set myself a target of 500 appearances as a professional.

“I want to play football at whatever level that may be and York is a massive attraction in that respect. I can maybe put myself in the minds of people here or somewhere else for next season by showing I can still do a job and, at 28, I have another ten years left in me.”
