YORK RUFC will head down the A1079 tomorrow for a 'Minster City' derby against Beverley.

Alarm bells - not church bells - will be ringing if they lose as York need every point available to keep pressure on second placed West Leeds in the Yorkshire One promotion race.

Yet neither team is likely to catch leaders Bridlington whose 15 point lead is now akin to a gothic tower peering down on the cities in their shadow.

Sixth-placed Beverley are currently one of the form teams in the division - with eight wins out of the last nine games.

Openside flanker Campbell Thomson, meanwhile, has been selected to play for the England Universities 7s in the Home Nations Festival in Edinburgh next month.

The games take place on April 10 and 11 so Thomson may miss York's penultimate game of the season against Old Brodleians on Saturday April 8.

Selby's battle against the drop continues away at seventh-placed Keighley who have won three of their last four games.

Last week's defeat by Beverley plunged Selby to within a point of the Yorkshire One relegation zone.

Yarnbury and Acklam still occupy the bottom two places.

York Railway Institute play host to Leeds Corinthians in Yorkshire Four.

Leaders Pocklington host mid-table Morpeth in North One East.

Seven points clear with five games to play, they will be hoping that second-placed West Hartlepool trip up against fourth-placed Alnwick.

Malton & Norton, who still need points to guarantee their North One East survival, have a tricky test at home to third placed Penrith.

Although eight points clear of the relegation zone, there can be no room for complacency in the remaining five games.

Spokesman Bill Laidler said: “Penrith have slipped recently from the top two position they have held for most of the campaign - but we will have to dig deep if we are going to get anything from the game."
