ACOMB Ladies have been dislodged by Hull University at the top of Yorkshire Women’s Hockey League division two.

The Tangerines were held to a goalless draw this weekend by Colne Valley who, coincidentally, were also the last team to beat Hull 16 games ago.

Goalkeeper Steph Barker only touched the ball once during the entire game - which only serves to highlight Acomb’s dominance - but opportunities at the opposite end of the pitch were spurned.

Captain Kerry Woods twice struck the post and both Vicki Wrigley and Kiera Woods were unlucky not to find the net.

The Tangerines kept the home side contained in their final quarter but it was not enough to secure maximum points.

Acomb I are just one point above the division two relegation zone in the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League after slipping to a fourth defeat in a row away at Leeds University I.

The veterans had a tough task on their hands against third placed Leeds but did well to stem early raids from the students.

Leeds took the lead with their second short corner, deftly deflecting the ball into Acomb’s net. The visitors resisted Leeds’ pressure for the remainder of the half and even created a couple of goalscoring opportunities for Matt Dickenson and Carl Brindley.

Acomb were confident that a favourable result could be achieved. The midfield duo of Stuart Baxter and Brindley worked their socks off and the defence stood firm against a string of short corners.

Acomb’s man of the match, goalkeeper Craig Brown, made a number of important saves but could do nothing to stop the strike that sealed a 2-0 victory for Leeds. The Tangerines now have four games remaining to secure their division two status.

Acomb II recorded their fourth victory in the last five games when beating third placed Airedale II in division five north.

Anthony Daley opened the scoring in the first half before Jonny Brown doubled Acomb’s advantage after the interval.

The visitors scored with a late penalty stroke despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Richard Crossland but Acomb held on for a 2-1 victory.
