YORK Schoolboys U13s side recorded a third consecutive draw at home to Scarborough in the league last weekend.

With several players missing, York looked to freshen up the squad and gave debuts to both Harry Watkinson and Jack Varley. The pair linked up to create York’s first chance of the game with Watkinson shooting wide.

Chances kept on coming for the home side with Taylor Bell and Ben Thornton working the Scarborough defence.

York looked secure at the back with Ben Hudson commanding alongside George Turbine and Ben Pearson.

Goalkeeper Toby Warren had been rarely troubled until Scarborough forced a corner midway through the first half. The ball beat everyone before falling to a Scarborough attacker whose shot from inside the box left Warren stranded.

York equalised five minutes later following a good move down the right wing.

Bell played a one-two with Watkinson on the edge of the box to open up the away team’s defence. Bell’s shot beat the Scarborough goalkeeper at his near post.

The equaliser gave York the boost they needed and Harry Tinker and Oliver Kilvington then began running the game in search of a second goal.

The second half brought changes to both sides with York reverting to a back three and pushing an extra man up the field.

Elliott Heath’s crosses worked the Scarborough goalkeeper and fine tackling by Jackson Cowl and Dan Tingle kept the side on the front foot.

It was one way traffic for the majority of the second half and Todd Edgar, in goal for York, became a virtual bystander.

Heath hit the inside of the far post with a cross-cum-shot and the ball bounced back across the goal. Thornton was unable to wrap his foot around the ball and shot wide meaning the game finished 1-1.

York U11s missed out on silverware after losing in the semifinals of the Yorkshire Cup.

In group games, York lost 2-1 to Sheffield but beat Barnsley 6-0 and Leeds ‘B’ 3-0.

York played entertaining football against strong opposition but lost 2-0 against Leeds ‘A’ in a close contest.

Player of the Tournament was Ben Myers whose set-pieces caused opposition teams problems throughout.

The U11s now play Leeds, Sheffield, East Riding and Scarborough in a mini Champions League having won the Yorkshire League. The youngsters won all of their league games prior to Christmas.
