YORK City goalkeeper Kyle Letheren has been challenged to come back stronger after costly errors in his last two games.

Letheren allowed a speculative Danny Johnson shot to beat him from long range just 33 seconds into Tuesday night’s 3-1 home defeat to Gateshead.

The 29-year-old, former Dundee net-minder was also culpable for Boreham Wood’s equaliser during Saturday’s 1-1 draw in Hertfordshire after dropping a left-wing cross and, ahead of this afternoon’s FA Trophy clash against Brackley at Bootham Crescent, City chief Gary Mills said: “He’s got to hold his hands up and be strong after his mistake at Boreham Wood and, certainly, for the first goal on Tuesday night, which was hard to explain because he would saved that shot every time in training.

“He will be so, so disappointed how simple that goal was and there’s no point in me saying it wasn’t his fault. He’s made two mistakes and he knows that, so it’s not me putting any pressure on him.

“He’s experienced enough and has made some good saves for us when they were needed. He’s not been tested a great deal over the last few weeks, which is credit to how we have been playing but, while people have been talking about us not taking chances, we did score against Gateshead, Boreham Wood and Maidstone and we can’t keep saying that when we’re giving goals away as well.”
