THE West of Yore Point-to-Point at Askham Bryan College on Sunday has received a total of 126 entries.

It is the first of two Yorkshire Area meetings to be held at this relatively new venue this season.

The action begins at 12.30pm with the Confined Hunts Race, which has been split given its high number of entries.

Division one includes 15-year-old My Old Piano, a prolific pointer down the years who could outclass his rivals if the fire still burns. However, Fever Pitch could be hard to catch if showing the form that saw him second at Alnwick, while pace could also come from the ever-improving Ivan Boru.

Division two looks similarly competitive, with arguably the most reliable horse involved being Nosecond Chance, who was placed numerous times last year.

Qoubilai is a decent pointer on his day, too, though his victories have come in smaller fields than this. “He is getting on a bit, but still seems to retain plenty of enthusiasm,” said trainer John Dawson. “He would however prefer better ground.”

One to watch in the Restricted could be Mickey Miller, who showed some temperament last time when hanging off the course at Sinnington. After coming to a halt after the second last, Jack Jordan and his mount jumped the last well in the rear but flew home to get up to third.

The Mixed Open has the most entries of the day with 31.

Close House returned from a long absence to be fourth at Sheriff Hutton and with some classy form under rules could be a threat, likewise Muirhead.

Pertemps Network has won here and tends to force the pace from the front, while Six A Side also has claims, an impressive winner of a Kelso Hunter Chase on his last start. “He wants good ground ideally,” said trainer Emma Todd. “He’s never run here but I think it will suit him - he’s very well at home and we’re looking forward to running him.”

The Open Maiden could be between the in-form Bentons Lad and Crazy Penguin, who narrowly lost out at Alnwick on his point debut. “He seems in really good form - fingers crossed he has come on for that promising first run over obstacles,” said trainer Will Easterby.

The Intermediate race is a qualifier for Cheltenham. Bedford Forrest won at this meeting last year and could do well again, while Shantou Prince will have come on for his recent run.

The concluding Maiden includes Station Master, who could have strong chances with a clear round, and High Hopper, who has some form under rules for Malcolm Jefferson.

Admission is £10 per adult.
