ACOMB II kept alive their promotion hopes with a 1-0 victory over Leodis Leeds I in division five north of the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League.

The fixture had been postponed last month and the Tangerines were looking to complete a league ‘double’ following a 1-0 victory against the visitors in November.

They were put under severe pressure early on as Leodis attacked down the middle only to be denied by both John Armitage and Bob Unsworth.

The majority of the game was a stalemate with Leodis having more of the chances in the first half and the Tangerines losing possession due to slack passing.

However, after the break, goalkeeper Richard Crossland was kept busy and, when he was beaten, Armitage saved the day with a goal line clearance.

The visitors won plenty of penalty corners which were all cleared by the Tangerines’ defence.

But as the game wore on, James Graham-Brown, Owen Wilkie, Dave Timmins and Tom Brown started to gain more possession and create good opportunities.

The Tangerines were playing on the break and, in the final minute, skipper Jonny Brown’s effort fell nicely for Anthony Daley to push home the only goal of the game.

The result lifted Acomb above Leodis into fourth spot – nine points adrift of the second promotion place with five games to play.

Both Acomb I and Acomb Ladies had no fixtures this weekend but resume their league campaigns next week at Leeds University and Colne Valley, respectively.

Neither Tadcaster Magnets I or II played this weekend in the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League. Magnets I visit Brigg II next weekend in division two while Magnets II host leaders Halifax III in division five north.

Selby will host York II next weekend in the Yorkshire Women’s Hockey League premier division. Neither side were involved in action last weekend.

Tadcaster Magnets will host second placed Bridlington next weekend in the YWHL first division after also enjoying a blank weekend.
