YORK RI produced their best display of the season to beat Yorkshire Four leaders Skipton.

Still five points clear at the top of the table, Skipton had won 13 out of 14 league games prior to the weekend, losing only to third placed Burley.

By comparison, RI had lost eight out of 13 but still managed to upset the odds and win 24-19.

Skipton were gifted the lead early on when an RI winger slipped on the sodden turf and, by the eighth minute, his side trailed 14-0. But Francky Rossi made a great run to score and spark a revival. Baptiste Brui adding the extras.

Just before half-time, Tim Lewis stripped the home defence to score for Brui to convert again and level the scores. Skipton started to lose the plot and conceded a Brui penalty.

With Skipton’s bigger players tiring fast, the key moment of the game saw man of the match Chris Jones side-step several players to score a dazzling try. Brui added the extras to leave Skipton dazed at 24 -14.

Although Skipton reduced the deficit during added time, RI would not be denied an impressive victory.

Nestle Rowntree tightened their grip on second spot in the YRFU Central & North Merit League division one with a 17-12 victory over West Park Leeds 2nd XV.

Wing forward Fred Hudson charged over after 15 minutes with Jack Daniels converting. West Park breached the Trees defence after 20 minutes with an unconverted try.

Just before the break, West Park scored a converted try to lead 12-7. Having reduced the deficit with a penalty, Daniels converted after a superb try from Dave Harder to seal victory.

Selby 3rd XV won 24-19 at home to rock bottom Leeds Modernians 2nd XV.
