MATT Dickenson’s winning goal kept Acomb out of trouble in division two of the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League.

With local rivals City of York V picking up three points against City of York IV, Acomb would have slipped into the relegation zone if they had not beaten Lindum III.

However, Dickenson scored twice against the Lincoln-based side to secure a 2-1 victory.

In an equal first quarter, both sides had good possession and chances on goal.

The Tangerines opened the scoring when Ryan Smith’s through-pass found Dickenson and he drew the goalkeeper before sliding the ball to Nick Linfoot, who swept home from close range.

Goalkeeper Craig Brown made some fine saves but, on a one-on-one break, missed the ball which allowed an unmarked Lindum player to tap in.

Baz Whitfield, Peter Hilton, David Brown and Bob Unsworth kept a tight rein on the Lindum forwards and the Tangerines midfield – missing Carl Brindley, who was on Army duty – held their own, with David Richardson, Smith and Stuart Baxter working tirelessly.

It was a pass from Baxter that enabled Dickenson to sweep home the winner from the left.

Brown made more good saves and Jonny Brown missed out on a couple of one-on-ones with the goalkeeper but the Tangerines held on for three valuable points.

Acomb II’s game against Leodis Leeds I at the Energise was a casualty of the weather.

In division two of the Yorkshire Women’s Hockey League, Acomb’s ladies were able to play just 19 minutes at Leeds Adel III before the pitch was ruled unsafe and the game abandoned.

The fixture had been put back 30 minutes to allow earlier games to take place and the game started with good possession play between Hannah Yoward, Vicki Wrigley, Georgi Wood, Jenna Alinson and skipper Kerry Woods.

The Tangerines missed opportunities to score from two penalty corners and the home side had a couple of break-aways which were thwarted by Jane Elsworth, Sam Storr and keeper Stephanie Barker.
