A GAELIC football team has been set up by the York Irish Association.

A cross between rugby and association football, Gaelic football is played by two teams of 15 players on a rugby field.

Taster sessions are currently taking place every Saturday this month, starting at noon, at the York St John Sports Centre on Haxby Road. Men and women of all abilities are welcome to attend.

Brendan Tannam, chair of the York Irish Association, said: "Since we set up the York Irish Association three years ago, there has been an interest in setting up a Gaelic football team, so we are delighted that the training sessions are now up and running.

"We are excited by the potential of bringing the sport to the city. The sessions are are all about having fun in a relaxed setting. You don't have to have any experience of the sport or any connections to the Irish community to join in."

Tannam says that, once established, the team will be looking to enter the Yorkshire Championships, playing other teams across the region.

The York Irish Association is a community group set up in 2014 which aims to bring together the Irish community and anyone with an interest an Irish culture to celebrate the unique links between York and Ireland.

They organise events such as music nights, culture nights, Irish language lessons and the York Irish St Patrick's Festival.
