LIAM Goodwin stopped previously-unbeaten Doncaster opponent Jack Bray to win the Yorkshire amateur 75kg belt.

The Henry’s Gym fighter thrilled his home crowd at Acomb by ending the contest in the third round.

He now joins fellow belt-holders George Davey and Pete “The Jack” Stubbs at the club, which is owned and overseen by York’s former world championship challenger Henry Wharton.

Goodwin is expected to turn professional after another couple of fights and, after the 30-year-old endured a difficult start to his career, Wharton believes he is a shining example for younger fighters at Henry’s Gym.

“We now have four belts in the gym and we’re going from strength to strength,” Wharton enthused.

“We won nine out of the 11 bouts on the night but, even those who lost, only have to look at Liam for inspiration.

“He only won two of his first seven fights, but he didn’t bow his head when he got beaten or lost a decision.

“He got in the gym, stuck at it and worked hard on his skills to turn things around.

“People talk about it, but you don’t get overnight success in boxing and Liam is an example of what you put into the sport, you get out of it, because he never misses a session in the gym.

“He got a silver medal from one of the biggest tournaments in the country at the Haringey Cup and now he has a Yorkshire belt after winning in fantastic style with a third-round stoppage.”

Goodwin joins Davey, who won an elite belt at 69kg, as well as Northern and Yorkshire belt holder Stubbs in the Henry’s Gym roll of honour.

The next show at the Regents Building venue will be held in late February with details released closer to the date.

Standards tickets cost £40, with VIP tickets costing £10 more and including premium seating, as well as a photograph with Duran.
