YORK City Knights are STILL waiting for confirmation they can play games at Bootham Crescent.

Following the takeover of the club by Jon Flatman, the Rugby Football League reinstalled James Ford's team into the 2017 Kingstone Press League One fixture list, which starts with cup ties in February. Those reissued fixtures came out last weekend.

However, City of York Council, while reiterating that it has agreement with landlords York City for rugby league matches to take place at the football ground as part of its community stadium scheme, has yet to say whether the Knights will be allowed there.

There is no other suitable venue in York for professional rugby league games since the Knights' old Huntington Stadium was bulldozed to make way for the planned - but much-delayed - new arena that is to be shared by both clubs.

A City of York Council spokeswoman said: “We remain committed to developing rugby league in York. Alongside York City FC, we have an agreement that will allow rugby league to continue at Bootham Crescent for the 2017 and 2018 rugby league seasons, until the opening of the new community stadium.

“To ensure value for residents we have a responsibility to carry out due diligence on the York City Knights takeover, which is normal practice for any contract which involves a financial commitment from the council.

"This work is currently underway and further details will be provided in due course.”

Confirmation of Knights being able to play at Bootham Crescent had been expected in some quarters following Wednesday night's meeting of the council executive, which heard an update on the troubled community stadium project.

The rugby league club are planning to have up to three pre-season fixtures before the season starts in February, but opposition and venues are yet to be confirmed.
