YORK RI RUFC have taken a big step off the field by appointing Richard Francis as a new club development officer.

Francis, who has played rugby for Newcastle outfit Northern and for NEC Harlequins in both 15-a-side and sevens formats, is charged with expanding RI's youth section while also supporting development of the men's and ladies' senior sides.

His sports teaching experience includes roles at St Peter's School in York, Prince Henry Grammar School in Otley and Kings School, Tynemouth.

In addition to development work at RI, he will support delivery of the RFU All Schools programme in a York secondary schools, a programme designed to increase the number of pupils playing the game.

Alex Grieve, the RFU community rugby coach for the York area, said: “It’s all about supporting the schools to make sport as enjoyable as possible and giving students the opportunity to play rugby union outside of school.

"Rugby can help build confidence and understanding of teamwork and we are fortunate we have clubs with great facilities in and around York”

Ali Jordan, youth chairman at York RI, said: "It’s a great boost to have Richard at the club and I look forward to working with him to increase our numbers.

"We already have a small but enthusiastic youth section which is managed by RFU-qualified coaches, and we offer great facilities and a friendly atmosphere. Whether new to the game or experienced, everyone is welcome to join us at our weekly training sessions."

Boys from Year 7 to 12 train at 6pm on Mondays, and girls from Year 7 to 12 girls from 5.45pm on Tuesdays.

Meanwhile, York RI's first team, mid-table in Yorkshire Four, go to Stanley Rodillians tomorrow looking to close the gap to the top half.

The club's senior teams train at 7pm on Mondays at their Hamilton Drive ground, and new players are welcome both there and in the high-flying ladies' team, who train at 7pm on Tuesdays.
