THE Energise Centre in York will host the inaugural Panathlon Northern Divisional Final on Wednesday, when a Yorkshire team will vie with Merseyside and North East counterparts for the title of North champions.

More than 50 disabled children will be competing after battling through county and regional heats to qualify for a meeting of the crème de la crème of young disabled athletes across the North of England.

The multi-sport competition, starting at 11am, comprises boccia, table cricket, kurling, polybat and field athletics.

It will be attended by Lancashire's double Paralympic cycling medallist, Rik Waddon, who won silvers at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Games, and this summer took bronze in the UCI Paracycling World Cup road time trial in Spain.

Yorkshire will be represented by pupils from Calderdale - specifically Brighouse School and Brooksbank Sports College - who won through as West Yorkshire and Yorkshire winners.

This competition is a new addition to Panathlon’s nationwide programme, which during the last academic year saw a record 10,083 disabled children from 563 schools across 27 counties engage in competitive sport.

The event will be overseen by students from York High School.

Tony Waymouth, Panathlon's chief operating officer, said: "It is great to bring the North's regional winners together and again see schools, teachers and young disabled athletes wanting to challenge themselves."
