YORK City manager Gary Mills is hoping to announce the signing of two more players before tomorrow's home clash with Sutton United.

Midfielder Charlie Cooper joined the Minstermen on loan from Birmingham City in midweek and Mills has been in talks with several other targets.

Wrexham captain Sean Newton is playing down talk of a move to Bootham Crescent but has not figured in the Welsh club's last two games.

Left-back Newton, 28, played every game under Mills at Wrexham last season and denies handing in a transfer request.

“I have not spoken to Gary since the day he got sacked,” said Newton. “I had a phone call off him to tell me he had been sacked and that is it.

“There are lots of rumours," he added. “I don’t know where I am at the minute. Something could be happening - but all I can say is I have not handed a transfer request in.

“You never know what can happen? One day you are loved and the next you are not. One day you are playing and the next you are not. Hopefully something will get sorted soon but we will just have to see what happens.”

Mills confirmed that Cooper, 19, is unlikely to be the only new arrival this week.

And although the youngster has yet to play first team football at any level, Mills insists that he is ready to be thrown into the club's survival bid.

"There would be no point bringing any player in if I didn't feel he could make an immediate difference to the team," said Mills. "We are not in a position to bring in players to sit on the bench.

"He's a good athlete and very good on the ball. He can get a goal for you or be the holding player. He's a player I like and who I thought about taking to Wrexham.

"I am speaking to players and hoping to get another one or two in before Saturday," Mills added. "We need to strengthen in all areas."

Cooper is the grandson of former England international defender Terry Cooper who spent 13 years playing for Leeds United during the Don Revie era.

His father Mark is the manager of National League leaders Forest Green Rovers and he spent four months on loan at the Gloucestershire club last season without playing a game.

Now a regular for Birmingham's under 23 side this season, Cooper has signed a one month deal.

Striker Fraser Murdoch has been released as Mills begins the process of reducing the the size of his 29 man squad. Other departures are on the horizon.

Goalkeeper Scott Flinders, however, is NOT looking to leave the club after holding talks with Mills.

Flinders has recently returned from a loan spell at Macclesfield Town and was thrust back into the spotlight at Southport in midweek following injury to Kyle Letheren.

Mills revealed that Flinders will start in goal for City for the first time since August 16 tomorrow as Letheren is ruled out by hip trouble.

"It's important for fans to know that Scott wants to play for York City," said Mills. "His only issue is that he wants to play regularly.

"Things happen at a football club but you have to move on. I went with Kyle against Chester and he did really well so kept his place - but he has got injured so Scott now has the opportunity.

"They are both good goalkeepers and I will decide over the next couple of weeks who I want between the sticks. "

Centreback Jack Higgins has shaken off the ankle injury that led to his substitution against Southport but right-back Lanre Oyebanjo (hamstring) is again ruled out.

Striker Richard Brodie, defender Shaun Rooney, and winger Daniel Nti are all back in contention after recovering from illness.

"I am looking for a reaction on Saturday without a doubt," said Mills, whose team are still without an away win in 13 months. "The players still have to show me why I shouldn't change things. They have to show that there is a future for them at York City and they can play the game the way I want it to be played."
