DON’T disrespect Sutton United when manager Paul Doswell is around.

Doswell is just about fed up of football supporters taking the mickey out of his club.

Only a few weeks ago, he launched a bizarre tirade against former Football League clubs now plying their trade in the National League.

“The bigger ex-League Two clubs don’t give us enough respect when they come to Gander Green Lane,” he said. “A lot of them are living in the past with their past glories.”

Doswell, who is assisted by former Leeds United ‘hardman’ Ian Baird, referred to Sutton as ‘hashtag #justapubteam’, saying: “That’s what most teams’ supporters are calling us – just a pub team from Sutton!

“We’re laughing about it.

“They have said we have a s**t ground, s**t players, s**t facilities, and s**t food, then we beat them – and we’re enjoying every minute!”

Doswell, manager for eight years, made his comments after Sutton beat three former League Two clubs – Lincoln, Torquay United, and Macclesfield – in the space of a week.

Last season’s National League South champions have since added Dagenham and Redbridge and Tranmere Rovers to their list of former Football League conquests so York City just beware!

The Minstermen host the men from Gander Green Lane for the first time tomorrow desperately looking for a victory to pull clear of the relegation zone. Sutton, meanwhile, are unbeaten in four games and are ten points better off in the table – only seven adrift of the play-off places.

The Us, based in the London Borough of Sutton, have never played in the Football League but are famous for pulling off one of the biggest upsets in FA Cup history when beating Coventry City in 1989.

Midfielder Nicky Bailey is, arguably, the biggest name in their current squad.

Now 32, he started his career at Sutton 15 years ago and played for Barnet, Southend United, and Charlton before Middlesbrough paid £1.4m for his services in June 2010.

Bailey spent three years at the Riverside Stadium but dropped down the league after an injury-plagued spell with Millwall. He is Sutton’s leading scorer this season with five goals.

Other players to look out for include on-loan Portsmouth duo Brandon Haunstrup and Adam May, and Senegalese midfielder Bedsente Gomis.
