PICKERING Town are through to the second round of the Buildbase FA Vase, thanks to an 88th-minute penalty.

Lewis Taylor's spot-kick gave them a 1-0 derby victory at Bridlington Town today in front of 334 spectators.

The previous day Harrogate Railway Athletic gained a much-needed 5-1 win in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division, with Paul Beesley, Fraser Hanson, Chris Ovington, Toby Lees and Stephen Bromley on target against Maltby Main, for whom Ryan Carroll scored in the 24th minute to make it 1-1.

However, The Rail remain 18th, two places above a relegation berth, but there was no joy in Division One for seventh-placed Selby Town, who surprisingly lost 4-0 at Ollerton Town to goals by Joshua Bowkett (2), Mark Carter and Brandon Shaw in front of the biggest crowd in the section.

Knaresborough Town drew 0-0 at Grimsby Borough in one of the lowest attendances as the duo stayed among the play-off places in fifth and sixth respectively.

In Vanarama National League North, Harrogate Town slipped to fourth after a 2-1 defeat against leaders AFC Fylde at Mill Farm.

A crowd of 1,935 saw the visitors grab a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time when the returning Tom Platt, as a stand-in centre half, headed Joe Leesley’s deep free-kick in off a post.

But the Coasters were back on level terms in the 62nd minute when a tame Sam Finley left-foot shot trickled through the arms of goalkeeper Peter Crook.

Four minutes later, James Hardy turned the game on its head, springing the offside trap via Bohan Dixon's through ball before rounding Crook and sliding it into an empty net.

Town, despite a lively debut by Marcus Day, could not find a way back into the contest and fell to a third league defeat of the season ahead of tomorrow night’s home match against Kidderminster Harriers.
