YORK weightlifter Bryn Jones won a silver medal at this month's World Masters Olympic Weightlifting Championships in Heinsheim, Germany.

Jones, who trains and coaches at York University Sports Centre, is a member of the York University Weightlifting Club.

Competing in the 85kg class category in the men's group aged 55- 60, he was up against thirteen other athletes from across the globe.

Jones was in third place after 'the snatch' section of the competition but a 120kg 'clean and jerk' enabled him to take silver medal beating Poland's Krzysztof Lapinski by 1kg into third place. The competition was won by Frenchman Geoffroy Guillaumet.

Jones, 55, said: "I think I could have got the gold but, having three and a half months off and less than three months to train was not enough. I only had ten weeks or so to prepare so I was pleased to get a medal. I owe a big thanks to my coach Eddie Halstead."

Jones, who lives in Dringhouses, also won silver at last weekend's North of England Open Senior Championships in the middleweight category (85kg class) and set a new British Masters Record (for the 55-60 age group) with a 96kg snatch.

"Next year, as long as I’m training, fit, and well - and it’s not interfering with work - I want to try and win the European Championships in Sweden," he added. "I might call it a day then, but I’ve said that before!"

Jones trains at University Sports Centre in Fulford and coaches students at the University Weightlifting Club on a Wednesday from 7pm til 8pm. Any member of the club is welcome to attend his sessions.
