A FORTUNATE long-distance goal pegged York Schoolboys Under-13s back as they drew 2-2 with Barnsley in their second Yorkshire League game of the season.

York led 2-0 thanks to Will Hollings' brace, but the South Yorkshire side halved the deficit and then sent in a speculative cross from far out, the flight of the ball beating everyone as it nestled in the top corner.

York had kicked off on the front foot and went ahead as Hollings headed home after Barnsley failed to clear a Harry Tinker corner.

The goal seemed to rouse Barnsley but York's defence stood firm, Jackson Cowl having his best game in schoolboy colours in a midfield holding role in.

York remained the dominant force, too, Elliott Rayner and Taylor Bell making chances down both wings.

They won a corner from one such attack and the ball bounced from head to head before Hollings again showed more determination than the defence to nod home from inside the six-yard box.

However, Bell departed after an awkward fall and Dan Tingle was also carried off after a crunching tackle.

In between times, the second half started with the away team determined to hit back. York remained on the front foot but Barnsley threatened on the break and, after winning a corner, scored a carbon copy of the two home goals.

York sought a third but Barnsley pushed for a leveller and, just as it seemed the storm had been weathered, the visitors got their goal, and the hosts' efforts to find a winner thereafter were in vain.

Captain Ellis Cattaneo rescued a point for York Schoolboys U12s in a ding-dong 3-3 draw at Barnsley.

York twice led but the hosts equalised both times and then took the lead, before Cattaneo composed himself and fired into the top corner for a late leveller.

The Minster city side started much better than against Scarborough, with the partnerships down both wings - Kaiden Butler and Matthew Dawes on the right, Dillon Meehan and Coles Gayles on the left - causing problems.

They had claims for a penalty for handball rejected before breaking the deadlock - a determined Tommy Cahill skilfully latching onto a diagonal ball over the top from Dawes before placing it into the bottom corner.

Barnsley were gifted an equaliser from a misplaced pass back but York responded well, keeping possession and creating chances.

Butler put them back ahead with a brilliant left-foot strike from outside the box and minutes later Tom Algar was unlucky to see a thunderbolt hit the bar.

However, Barnsley - having seen York keeper Noah Ellis make several fine saves - found another equaliser.

York pushed for a winner but left themselves open to the counter and Barnsley exploited the gaps, a long ball over the top seeing a coming together between keeper and striker, the referee awarding a penalty which was duly dispatched.

York had to gamble and, with five minutes left, Cattaneo got the deserved equaliser to cap a man-of-the-match show, just ahead of defenders Will Hotson and Matthew Dawes.

York Schoolboys U11s continued their good form with an 8-0 thrashing of Barnsley.

Ronnie Kelly's early brace set York on their way and midfielder Liam Mainprize added two more for a 4-0 interval lead.

Kelly completed his hat-trick before Jack Whalen, Fraser Clarke and finally Ben Myers sealed their comfortable win.

York’s goalkeepers, Henry Jackson and George Brown, were both forced into some outstanding saves, though, to keep a second clean sheet of term.
