YORK RUFC moved into the third round of the Yorkshire Shield following a comfortable win over Barnsley at Shaw Lane.

Both York, who are currently seventh in Yorkshire One, and Barnsley, who are ninth in Yorkshire Two, showed full commitment to the competition during the break from league action.

York named a strong side, captained by Chris Fox, with Sam Potrykus and Tom Newitt in the centres and Adam Penistone at fly-half. Shane Goulding played at number 8.

York scored after five minutes when Lewis Hannibal supported by Fox surged forward. George Davies kicked the conversion.

Barnsley pulled three points back when Callum Emery kicked a penalty from 40 metres out.

Barnsley full back Andrew Appleyard was kicking well from hand and gaining ground for the hosts.

But Gareth Singleton, who was playing on the wing rather than at centre, ran ten metres and scored in the corner before Davies kicked the conversion to make it 14-3 to York.

Barnsley were in no mood to surrender and nearly scored midway through the first half but the ball was knocked on one metre away from the try-line.

York showed strong set pieces, a disciplined structure, and committed running from both the forwards and the backs.

A forward pass by Barnsley near the try-line led to a scrum from which Shane Goulding scored a converted try to increase York’s lead.

Mark Fisher pulled a try back for Barnsley which was converted by Callum Emery to make the score 19-10 in York’s favour.

York re-established a three score lead soon after the re-start when Goulding got his second try. Davies converted.

Just before half-time, a line-out was overthrown and Barnsley dropped on the ball within the York 22. A long pass put Tom Parker in at the corner but the conversion was missed.

Barnsley centre Fisher was sin-binned 12 minutes into the second half and, soon after, York were awarded a line-out ten metres from the Barnsley line.

Fox collected the ball, Lewis Hannibal drove forward, Matt Hargreaves fed Adam Penistone who ran through a gap in the defence to score next to the posts. Davies converted to give York a 33-15 lead.

Fisher was still in the sin-bin when York were awarded a scrum. The ball was released to George Davies who beat a Barnsley defender for pace and scored five metres in from the touchline. He missed the subsequent conversion.

With a quarter of the game remaining, Newitt received the ball in space 40 metres out and scored in the corner. Davies converted from the touch-line to make it 45-14.

Hannibal scored his second try with a few minutes remaining. Davies hit the post with the conversion.

York’s replacement hooker scored the final try of the game, bursting through one tackle 45 metres out and running in.

Davies converted to make the final score Barnsley 15 York 57.
