CITY of York Hockey Club’s first and second men’s teams both secured first wins of the season.

York I beat Timperley in the the North Hockey Men’s League premier division while York II beat Rotherham in the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League premier division

Defeats in their opening three fixtures had left York I next-to-bottom of the table but they took the lead inside five minutes against Timperley when Jack Purrington slotted home. On-form Tom Feasby doubled the lead.

With fifteen minutes to play, Timperley converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1 and set up a tense finale. However, York settled the contest five minutes from time when Jack Fletcher scored his second goal in as many games.

York II started the game strongly against Rotherham and Tim Lister popped up inside the D after 10 minutes to score.

Rotherham equalised from a short corner but York took control of the game. Short corner routines were finished off by both Patrick Herriot and James Fitton to give York a 3-1 interval lead.

York changed tactics after the break and went to a full press. The move paid dividends as Herriot smashed home for his second of the game. Dan Tomkins added a fifth before Rotherham scored a late consolation to make the final score 5-2.

York III made it back-to-back wins in division one with a 3-1 victory away at Ben Rhydding II. The visitors scored in the first minute when a penalty corner was dispatched by Russ Bowry.

Ben Foster increased the lead from a penalty corner. The home team pulled a goal back but Jonathan Kilmartin restored York’s two goal cushion from a penalty corner.

In division two, York V lost 5-1 away at Leeds-based side Ramgharia. The team has yet to pick up a point so far this season but the newly-assembled set of players played nice hockey at times. David Catteral scored York’s only goal.

York VI moved up to third in division four north after a 5-2 victory over Wakefield V.

Bryce Tuckett put York ahead in the opening minutes and Tony Brimble doubled the lead just before the break. Andy Kay, Brimble, and Keith Wilson were on target in the second half.

In division five north, York VII ended Halifax III’s 100 per cent start to the season with a 3-3 draw.

Halifax broke the deadlock but Gordon Moore levelled. Moritz Coh added a second before Halifax scored twice to take the lead. Hyams equalised to earn York a share of the spoils.

The newly formed York VIII development side inflicted a 7-0 hammering on bottom-of-the-table Halifax IV. James Harrison scored four times and there were also goals for Jacob Birch, Charlie Laverack and Pete Richardson.
