YORK Schoolboys U13s saw off East Riding Schoolboys 6-0 in their opening friendly of term.

Sterner challenges will come but, with some new players and the move up to 11-a-side, the game was always going to be a test, yet they came through it in fine fettle.

East Riding's five-strong midfield kept York busy but Hollings was having a fine game in the centre, while forwards Ben Thornton and Elliot Heath caused the visiting defence plenty of problems.

It was no surprise when Heath beat the full-back and shot low into the far corner for a 15th-minute opener.

York, playing the classier football, made it two when Harry Tinker put in a cross that beat everyone except Lewis Humphreys, who in turning the ball in collided with an upright

East Riding couldn't break down the home defence, Joe Roughley and Dan Tingle confidently mopping up anything thrown at them, Todd Edgar not tested in goal.

Taylor Bell, starring with exciting runs, won a corner which ultimately fell to Heath, who turned and fired high into the net.

Five minutes later, Heath had his hat-trick, Oliver Kilvington found Elliott Rayner, whose crossfield ball put Heath clean through to clinically beat the keeper before he could set himself.

Ridings came out fighting in the second half but couldn't break down the home defence, Ben Pearson having a fine debut at right-back and George Turbine solid as ever on the left.

Ben Hudson was back to his best at centre-back, looking to take the ball out into midfield with an air of authority. Jackson Cowl worked tirelessly in midfield, especially noticeable during the visitors' best spell of the match, while Toby Warren, now in goal, dealt with everything that came his way.

York, with the wind against them, were still playing the better football and when Humphreys put Thornton through, he bent the ball round the keeper with power and accuracy.

Thornton bagged a stylish second ten minutes from time, Jackson Cowl and Humphreys having set him up after the move of the match.

York U11 Schoolboys started with a 4-1 home victory against East Riding.

York forced the early pace resulting in defensive errors from the opposition - striker Bobby Boyson latching onto a wayward back pass on eight minutes to give his side the lead.

East Riding persisted in their sharp passing game but when their keeper collided with a defender on 18 minutes, Ronnie Kelly clinically finished from 12 yards.

East Riding would have scored on 24 minutes but for a fine save from George Brown.

Instead, just before half-time, Boyson got his second with a fine strike from the right edge of the area.

However, right on the whistle, Riding replied with a well-worked goal to make it 3-1.

The second half was much tighter. East Riding made several changes and the fresh legs changed the momentum.

However, stout defending from Paul Iggulden, Jamie Hudson and Noah Morgan kept them at bay and, after soaking up the pressure, York broke away for Kelly to get his second after good work from Dylan Jones and Jack Whalem in midfield.
