YORK paid for mistakes as they were pegged back in a 28-28 Yorkshire One share-all with Hullensians at Clifton Park.

At times York played some of their best rugby this season but basic errors cost them.

The result left them in mid-table after four games in which they have used 34 players - a stat which shows strength in depth but makes it difficult to build consistency.

Hullensians, who arrived one point above York in the table, kicked off into the wind and went ahead with a try after three minutes following a turnover, the backs moving the ball well.

Following the restart, York put several phases of play together, and Liam Hessay put Chris Fox in on a great line at pace to crash over. Neil McClure hit a post with the conversion.

York dropped the restart, handing possession back to Hullensians - a theme throughout the first half.

The visitors took advantage, building pressure and forcing a penalty 35 metres out. Clayton McCloud, an accomplished kicker, made no mistake.

The game settled with York enjoying periods of possession and playing some attractive rugby. From a scrum, Josh Parker made a 50-metre break but handling again let the side down with the try-line in sight.

Hullensians cleared but the York backs quickly ran the ball back, Gareth Singleton's powerful charge leading to desperate defence conceding a penalty which McClure knocked over to level the scores.

From the restart, Fox secured possession and offloaded to Will Dunlop, who, showing good footwork and great pace, set off on a 75-metre sprint to the posts, McClure goaling.

However, more handing errors gave possession away, allowing to Hullensians to move the ball at speed and score, McCoud's conversion from wide on the right making it 15-15.

Still, Hessay and Ben Johnson combined to force play into the Hullensians half, winning a penalty with which McClure edged York 18-15 ahead at half time.

The second half started with a succession of errors resulting in a penalty to Hullensians which McCloud despatched.

However, an excellent restart from McClure was collected by Fox who charged towards the Hullensians line and offloaded for Marc Benson to crash over and regain the lead again, McClure converting.

The game now saw both teams play good rugby, but defences took control for the first time in the match.

York secured quick ball from a scrum in their own half allowing Hessay to break upfield. He combined well with McClure to release George Davies on the wing, but he was thwarted by a good cover tackle.

York kept up the pressure and eventually won a penalty which McClure booted for a 28-18 lead with 15 minutes left.

However, Hullensians were not finished and after good interplay between forwards and backs, went over for a converted try.

They quickly won a penalty, too, just inside the York half, McCloud levelling the scores again.

York came straight back, quick hands between Hessay and McClure opening the visitors up down the left. However, as Lewis Hannibal looked to have scored the winner, he was flagged in touch.

The final play then saw a penalty awarded to York 40 metres out but, into the wind, McClure's attempt drifted wide.

Meanwhile, Selby lost 35-20 at home to Bridlington, who head the table with four wins from four.
