UNBEATEN York Minster Engineering League premier division leaders Huntington Rovers needed penalties to beat Malton & Norton in the first round of the York FA Senior Cup.

Goalkeeper Chris Barratt’s save sent Rovers through 4-2 after Chris Dyson, James Edmond, Joe Milner and George Brown all converted their spot kicks.

Steve Jarman’s side-footed volley had earlier sent Huntington into the interval 1-0 to the good, and youngster Brown’s first goal for the club doubled the hosts’ lead.

But Malton levelled with two goals in the final five minutes to force a shoot-out.

Elsewhere, Gary Newton and Matt Tiplady both hit hat-tricks as Wigginton Grasshoppers cruised past Cliffe 11-0.

Sporting Knavesmire also progressed through penalties following a 4-4 thriller at Copmanthorpe.

Dan Owers settled the tie from 12 yards after Tom Owen had earlier latched on to a through ball to put Sporting 1-0 up after only four minutes.

An Alex Dale penalty doubled the tally, but Copmanthorpe were level by the interval.

Dale got a second to nudge Knavesmire back in front, but Cop turned the tables to lead before Owers’ equaliser ensured honours finished even after 90 minutes.

York RI were 4-0 winners against Brooklyn, courtesy of a Ben Jones brace and other efforts from Liam Stilgoe and Josh Coulson.

Kirkbymoorside, Church Fenton White Horse, F1 Racing, Rawcliffe, Poppleton United, Tadcaster Magnets and Thorpe United all received byes into the next round.

In the York FA Junior Cup, Ethan McPhearson’s hat-trick helped Tadcaster Magnets reserves rout Jorvik Blades 9-2.

Stamford Bridge were also comfortable 4-0 winners over Easingwold Town reserves with substitute Max Faulkner striking twice and being joined on the scoresheet by Jamie Rank and Paul Upton.

Lee Bunce fired in four goals and Kieran Flanagan hit the target as Huntington Rovers reserves overcame their Wigginton Grasshoppers counterparts.

Heworth Green emerged 6-1 victors against Harrison Signs reserves with John Moore grabbing a hat-trick and Dan Marshall (two) and Freddie Robinson, with a screamer, the other marksmen.

Byes were given to Heworth Green reserves, Dringhouses reserves, Wilberfoss reserves, Civil Service reserve, Barmby Moor reserves, Moor Lane, Heslington reserves, Church Fenton White Horse reserves, South Milford, Pocklington Town thirds, Raj FC, Strensall and Huby United.
