YORK City’s win-less away run was stretched to a 28th game following a 2-0 defeat at in-form Barrow.

The Minstermen sussumbed to two second-half goals in six first-half minutes with home skipper Danny Livesey opening the scoring before City centre-half Matty Fry put through his own net.

A direct Barrow team, who did not include one player below the height of 6ft, called Kyle Letheren into early action from Byron Harrison’s downward header following Dom Smith’s long throw.

Harrison’s acrobatic-12 yard overhead effort and a curling Jordan Williams free kick, meanwhile, were a comfortable height for Letheren to gather.

It was City, though, that came closer to breaking the deadlock on 25 minutes when Aidan Connolly’s excellent pass dissected the home defence and sent Shaun Rooney clear through the right channel.

Rooney’s low shot then beat Barrow keeper Joel Dixon, but was kicked off the line by covering captain Danny Livesey.

The subsequent corner, delivered by Connolly, also saw Jack Higgins steer a near-post attempt wide.

At the other end, a stretching Harrison effort again lacked the power to trouble Letheren from Williams’ left-wing cross.

But City threatened on the stroke of half-time when Connolly’s 20-yard strike forced Dixon into a near-post save following tigerish play by Jake Wright. Early in the second period, Rooney’s header from a Connolly corner called Dixon into action, while Higgins threw his body at a Williams attempt to divert the ball wide of Letheren’s near post.

Moments later, the Minstermen’s keeper made a smart save to push away Liam Hughes’ volley but, from the resulting left-wing Williams corner, Paul Cox’s men forged in front after an unmarked Livesey steered the ball past Letheren at the near post on 58 minutes.

Letheren reacted smartly again to deny Harrison on the hour and Hughes also curled wide from the edge of the box.

A 25-yard drive by Heslop, meanwhile, was routinely gathered by Dixon before the Bluebirds doubled their lead on 64 minutes.

Williams beat substitute Josh Robinson, who had just been brought on as a makeshift right back for the injured Rooney, far too easily and his low left-wing centre was turned in by Fry.

Shortly afterwards, Connolly’s shot creeped narrowly wide after he exchanged passes with substitute debutant Fraser Murdoch, but Hughes screwed a ten-yard opportunity wide and Ross Hannah showed intelligent improvisation before heading just over.

With the home side full of confidence, Harrison’s effort from inside his own half bounced over Letheren’s crossbar, while Murdoch volleyed over from 15 yards for the Minstermen.
