YORK City Knights are considering appealing the Rugby Football League decision to bar them from promotion should they win the play-offs.

James Ford's team travel to France today for tomorrow's League One play-off semi-final with table-toppers Toulouse Olympique at Stade des Minimes (4pm UK time).

But they were told by the RFL on Wednesday evening that the club were not "currently eligible for promotion to the Kingstone Press Championship" because they "have been unable to provide the RFL with security of tenure at a ground that meets the necessary standards until the end of the 2017 season".

Knights chairman John Guildford believes the club still have a contract to play at York City's Bootham Crescent next year as part of City of York Council's community stadium project - something that has not been confirmed by the council - and announced on Wednesday an agreement to stage home games at Featherstone Rovers should City's ground prove unavailable.

Guildford said: "I still believe we're entitled to promotion as we have alternative arrangements in place should Bootham Crescent not be available. I believe we still have a contract to play at Bootham Crescent. The alternative facilities also meet Championship criteria."

The club have the right to appeal the RFL's decision within seven days of Wednesday's notice, and Guildford said: "I will take a view next week on whether we appeal after taking advice."
