THE York C&IU bowling season was brought to a dramatic conclusion with Holgate WMC winning their rearranged match against Poppleton Road 6-2 to overtake Clarence by one point and retain the Evening League title.

It completed another wonderful season for Holgate having again done the double of Evening and Afternoon League as well as taking the Four Wood Pairs and the Veteran Pairs competitions.

Meanwhile, a full turnout of 24 teams from across York and surrounding areas competed in the third Eric Wilkinson Open Triples at York RI Bowling Club - with Mal Bulmer’s RI Corinthians trio taking the main Co-Operative Funeralcare Shield.

Competition was fierce in the quickfire format tournament, with the Corinthians team and Pete Jackson’s Holgate WMC triple leading the way.

Beginning in opposite halves of the draw, both progressed smoothly through their quarter and semi-finals and engaged in a hard-fought final in which Bulmer, Dave Preece and Denis Sanderson flew into a 12-0 lead which they never let slip.

In the plate competition, Terry Wheatley’s Scarcroft triple, also comprising Pete Smith and John Holtby, won the final against Lindon Wilson’s side from Thornton le Dale.
