YORK City midfielder Matt Dixon is hoping the club can address the discrepancy between their home and away form over the bank holiday weekend.

The Minstermen play host to Woking tomorrow before travelling to Wrexham on bank holiday Monday, having only lost one of their last eight Bootham Crescent clashes, but still failed to register a single away win during 20 trips under Jackie McNamara, including 16 that have ended in defeat.

Dixon, though, has set a minimum target of four points from the next two games, as he calls for greater consistency wherever the team are playing.

He admitted: “Our away record is not really on our minds, but it’s a problem that everyone knows about now. When we do go away, we’ve got to be more solid as a team and just play the way we do at home.

“When we play at home, we play without fear from the start, which helps us a lot. We’ve got to come out of the weekend unbeaten and with at least one win, especially at home to a team who have started poorly.

“Wrexham will be very tough, especially with the game coming just two days afterwards but, although we weren’t very good at Gateshead, the reaction at Forest Green last Saturday was pleasing and I thought we deserved something there.”

Dixon was handed his first start of the season at Forest Green and the occasion also marked only the seventh time he had made a City first XI since his January arrival from Hull.

Having been given the freedom to join in attacks, though, the 21-year-old midfielder was pleased with his display.

“It was my best performance in a York shirt,” he said. “I was used in more of a holding role last season, so it was the first time I’ve had the licence to go forward and I enjoyed it.”

Senior pros Simon Heslop, Clovis Kamdjo and Yan Klukowski provide the competition for midfield places this season but, while Dixon wants to benefit from their knowledge, he is also hoping to establish himself in the pecking order for starting positions.

“All three of them are good players,” he reasoned. “They have all played in the Football League and had different experiences to pass on to me, so the more I learn from them the better really.

“But I’m here to play and, now I’ve got into the team, I’ve got to do everything I can to stay in it.”

Skipper Heslop will not feature against Woking as he serves a one-match ban with Kamdjo set for a recall.

On that change, Dixon added: “Losing your captain is a big loss, but Clovis has already proven he can come in and do a job.

With Scott Flinders currently serving a club suspension, Dixon is just one of four players, along with Danny Galbraith, Reece Thompson and Callum Rzonca, who were in the first-team fold as the club lost their Football League status last season.

He is well qualified, therefore, to claim that the team camaraderie in this term’s squad is stronger.

“This season the squad is a lot more together,” he insisted. “The team spirit on and off the pitch is a lot better.

“We’re a closer group. We haven’t shown that on the pitch yet really, but I’m sure it will help us over the season.

“Going out of the Football League wasn’t good but, when I first came in, I knew the situation and, in football, you have to take risks. It’s one I took that hasn’t paid off so far but, hopefully, I can have a good season personally and the team can have a good season and we can get back up there.”
