ANGUS BRADSHAW returned from holiday to help hosts Wigginton beat relegation-threatened Racquets in Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League division one.

Racquets captain Richard Shannon and Bill Brown caught the talented 18-year-old still on the beach but lost 7-5 to him and Ben Walker.

The Wigginton number ones were outshone by James Walker and Phil Langley, who had 3-32.

There was crunch match calamity for title contenders Sutton-on-Derwent.

They romped their division two shoot-out against second-placed Dunnington - but included a player tied to Sheriff Hutton in their line-up. The resulting narrow win for Dunnington put them equal top, behind only on games-for.

Appleton Roebuck kicked for division three success with a big win over third-placed York 2. Losing just one rubber, Buck boasted two unbeaten pairs against the former front-runners, with Geoff Bullock and captain Tom Shouksmith stampeding to 3-26.

Relegated-threatened Boston Spa ran into recently returned Steve and Jamie Spaven at Rowntree Park 2, who knocked them back with 3-29. Spa just remain in the drop zone, having fewer games-for than Harlow.

Lowly Fulford 2 served up one of the oddest results of the season, as a final round 10-2 by Graham Cook and Mark Cook brought an unlikely win at division four champions elect Starbeck 3, whose first two pairs had battered the strugglers with 6-45.

It was only the second defeat of the year for the runaway leaders, who must now wait another week for their coronation.

Alne & Tollerton 2 also took a Sheriff Hutton player to their inter-divisional match at division six’s Pocklington. Chris Milnes and Simon Eggleston were in a different league with 3-29 for hosts Harlow in their inter-divisional against a well-balanced Wigginton 4, who hoovered up the remaining rubbers and the bonus.

A bad week got worse for Sutton-on-Derwent, as their second team conceded their inter-divisional match at home to division six leaders Academy 2 because of a fixture clash.

A 22-game final round at David Lloyd 3 snatched nine points from only 56 games won for division eight promotion contenders Wilberfoss 2, who will be hoping Wigginton 3 slip up at home to Knaresborough in their final match.

Meanwhile, Castlegarth’s win against Boston Spa ensures their promotion from division two of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League.

Champions Fulford rounded off their campaign with a big win against Cliffe to finish the season unbeaten.

Andrene Watson and Jackie Hanson hit form for Bishopthorpe in their win over Copmanthorpe, which, with Wigginton’s defeat at Cawood, sees them take the second promotion slot in division five on games difference.
