YORK City Knights players past and present are showing their solidarity and support for the team’s plight by changing their profile pictures on social media.

Numerous fan favourites have selected photos of their time at the club for their profiles on Facebook and Twitter, while York-born ex-England and Super League star Peter Fox even uploaded a video declaring his desire to see a resolution to save the city’s professional club.

The support comes as hopes are raised that the club can be saved – or a new one quickly formed to effectively take the Knights’ place with immediate effect and finish the season.

“Some of the best days of my rugby career with my family and best mates,” wrote current Newcastle Thunder winger Fox, the former York Acorn ARLC junior who launched his stellar pro career at his home-town club over a decade ago.

“Some of my favourite years in RL,” wrote Jordan Ross, who captained York in their 2010 promotion season and lifted the Championship One Grand Final trophy after the victory over Oldham. Ross now lives in Australia.

Aussie Dave Buckley changed his profile pic to one of him playing for York, back in 2007, likewise London-based Yusuf Sozi, one of the heroes of Mick Cook’s 2005 National League Two title-winning side. Team-mate Chris Ross uploaded a York Press pic of Cook and co with the trophy.

Former juniors, reserves and aspiring local players past and present joined in, too, as did supporters.

Various former team-mates now with allegiances to rival clubs, like Fox, also showed solidarity by changing their profile pics to their time at Huntington Stadium.

Head coach James Ford’s Facebook pic became one of his team celebrating a try.

The squad have said they will stick together for now in the hope a resolution can be found for them to re-launch their campaign.

The Knights were closed down on Thursday night after which a statement from the board said the business was unsustainable due to problems with the City of York Council’s community stadium project and the groundshare with York City. Directors Dave Baldwin and Neil Jennings quit the board in the wake of that decision, leaving only chairman John Guildford and Sarah Guildford as remaining directors.

The council, the Rugby Football League and York City issued a joint statement on Friday insisting there was a future for pro rugby league in York.

Talks have been taking place behind the scenes with a view to finding a solution to at least see the season out.
